What to Do If You Have a VirusWindows Users | Macintosh UsersWindows UsersCheck and disinfect your computer. Some viruses attack antivirus software, so I recommend you use NAI's free Stinger tool (leaving our site). If you use Stinger, be sure to follow all the instructions they providein particular, if you use WinME or WinXP, disabling System Restore. Otherwise, you'll be wasting time and effort. IN ADDITION I recommend booting in Safe Mode also. Also, note that while Stinger removes a few nasty viruses, it does NOT detect most of the 200000+ viruses known to existnor does it protect you from getting reinfected. For that, you must use normal antivirus software. One more time: Stinger is for detection and removal only, not protection. Install antivirus software. University folks can download such software here. When you install this software, it will already be set to automatically update itself; it will regularly check for and install new virus definitions as they become available when your computer is connected to the Internet. Macintosh UsersViruses are far less of a threat to Macintosh users; most viruses infect only computers running Windows. The University provides Sophos Anti-Virus software for the Macintosh, and we recommend that Mac users install this software just to be on the safe side.
