U-M Preconfigured McAfee Anti-Spyware Enterprise (MASE) 8.0 Module Installation
MASE 8.0 is for Windows NT, 2000, XP, and 2003 Server with VirusScan 8.0 already installed.
The current build of the U-M Preconfigured MASE 8.0 Installer was created 25
January 2007, and is functionally equivalent to
the original 20 December, 2006 release. [The changes help standardize the procedure when MASE finds something, making it
easier for end users to report problems, and for us to assist.]
After successful installation, right-clicking on the VirusScan icon in the System Tray (near the clock) and selecting
"About VirusScan Enterprise" should display the text "VirusScan + Anti-Spyware Module 8.0.0"

Before Installing MASE 8.0
NOTE: If you are installing MASE on a departmental computer, please check first with your departmental IT support
person.
- Get your computer ready to install MASE 8.0:
- Make sure that you are using a 32-bit version of Windows; if you use a 64-bit version of Windows, please
e-mail virus.busters@umich.edu for assistance.
- If you don't whether you use a
32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows, you almost certainly use the 32-bit version.
- You can check by right-clicking on My
Computer and selecting "About"; if it's 64-bit, it will say e.g., "Microsoft Windows XP Professional x64 Edition" If it's the
32-bit version, it will say only e.g., "Microsoft Windows XP Professional".
- And it won't hurt anything if you run the U-M
MASE 8.0 Installer on a 64-bit system; it just won't work yet (it will claim that VirusScan 8.0 is not installed). We hope to
have this fixed soon.
- Make sure VirusScan8.0 is installed
- Verify that MASE is not installed already (see instructions for checking) It's ok to install "on top" of an existing install, though, if MASE isn't working, to reinstall the U-M settings, or "just because."
- The MASE 8.0 installer modifies the Registry. If you use tools like SpyBot S&D's resident utility TeaTimer, you may want to disable them before starting. Otherwise, be sure to allow the changes to the Registry, if asked./li>
- Download the MASE 8.0 installer. (Download it now) to make sure you
are using the current U-M build of the installer.
Installing MASE 8.0
- Double-click the installer file.
- Follow the instructions displayed by the installer. Installation includes these steps:
- Installation of the MASE software.
- Installation of the U-M customized tasks.
- Scanning of your computer for suspicious Registry entries and Cookies (takes only a couple of minutes for the scan at install time). If anything significant is detected, an additional scan will start, which might take 10 minutes to an hour or
more, depending on how many files you have. If an infection is found, you will be given instructions to contact Virus Busters for help disinfecting your computer.
A NOTE ABOUT TIME: The installation itself takes just a few minutes. As part of the installation process, however, MASE
will scan your computer. Since VirusScan is already installed, we suspect that no significant threats will be found in most
cases (probably only dodgy cookies). But if modifications have been made to your Registry, a more thourough scan will
commence; this may take 10 minutes to an hour, or even longer if you have a lot of files, a slow computer, etc.
After Installing MASE 8.0
Check to be sure that MASE 8.0 is installed:
- Right-click the VirusScan Shield icon in the System Tray (by the clock)
- Choose <About>.
- It should say "VirusScan + Anti-Spyware Module 8.0.0."
