U-M Preconfigured Sophos Anti-Virus (for Mac OS X) Installation Summary
Sophos Anti-Virus protects computers running Mac OS X (10.2 or later). The Sophos U-M license allows faculty, staff, students, and U-M Online subscribers to install Sophos Anti-Virus on their U-M office and home computers.
For complete instructions that walk you through the installation and configuration steps summarized below, see Installing and Setting Preferences for Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac OS X] (S4339).
- Download the U-M installer (50 MB) from the Blue Disc web site. On that site, first select the Mac OS operating system, then click the download link for Sophos Anti-Virus.
- Before installing Sophos, uninstall any existing anti-virus software on your Macintosh to prevent conflicts. If you are replacing an earlier version of Sophos (particularly the initial 4.6.x build available from mid-January 2006 until noon 06 March 2006), be sure to uninstall the earlier version first (How to Uninstall Sophos)
- Install Sophos Anti-Virus. U-M's installer installs the Sophos Anti-Virus software for you.
- Run AutoUpdate. This will get you the most current set of virus definitions.
- Set preferences. We recommend that you set preferences as described in Installing and Setting Preferences for Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac OS X (S4339). Doing so will ensure the strongest level of protection and ease the trouble-shooting process, should the need arise.
- Scan your computer for viruses.
