U-M Preconfigured VirusScan 8.0 Installation—Detailed Instructions

First, follow the instructions in Before Installing VirusScan 8.0—Detailed Instructions.

Installing VirusScan is straightforward—just double-click the installer (vs80um.exe) and follow the directions on-screen. In fact, for the most part, there are no instructions to follow—just an explanation of what is going to happen next; the installation is almost completely automated.

1. Begin by double-clicking the installer.

NOTE: Please make sure your computer has been disconnected from the Internet, as described in Before Installing VirusScan 8.0—Detailed Instructions.

Double-click the U-M Preconfigured VirusScan 8.0 installer file that you downloaded (vs80um.exe). Installation will begin.

2. What happens during installation.

  1. You will see a beginning screen with information about the VirusScan version and which drivers and engine it contains. This screen also notes that you should removed all anti-virus software from your computer and restart it before running the installer.
  2. You will be shown a Welcome to the University of Michigan Pre-Configured VirusScan 8.0 Installer file with some general information. It will remind you that if you are installing VirusScan on a departmental machine, you should first check with your departmental IT support person,
  3. You will be shown a Removing Previously Installed Antivirus Software file. This file explains why it is important to remove all antivirus software before installing VirusScan 8 and provides instructions for doing so.
  4. You will be asked to verify that you have indeed removed all anti-virus software from your computer and restarted before running the installer.
  5. You will be shown an Installing VirusScan 8.0 file. You may want to print this file for future reference. It describes the rest of the installation process and provides instructions for checking to see that auto updates are working correctly.
  6. The McAfee VirusScan Enterprise wizard will open, and VirusScan will be installed. This takes just a few minutes.
  7. You'll see a message telling you to connect to the Internet.
  8. VirusScan will update its virus definitions over the Internet.
  9. You will be shown a Scanning Your Computer After Installing VirusScan file. This file describes the scanning process and lets you know what you will see during the scan.
  10. VirusScan will scan your computer for viruses. This may take 10 minutes to an hour or more, depending on how many files (including applications) you have on your computer.
  11. If a virus is found, you will be shown instructions for dealing with the infection.
  12. You will be asked if you would like to view the Virus Busters Security Recommendations on the web after the installation.
  13. You will be prompted to restart your computer, then asked to close all open applications.

Please keep these points in mind:

  • If you run into any problems during the U-M parts of the install—that is, any time when the McAfee installer is not in control—see the U-M VirusScan 8 FAQ for troubleshooting and problem-resolution tips.
  • Sometimes the installer may appear to pause for a few moments—please be patient; it should continue within a minute or less. This pause is usually most conspicuous after Virusscan is installed, but before it updates its virus definitions. Right before this, you will be asked to reconnect to the Internet, so don't be concerned if the installer seems to do nothing for almost a minute.
