INSTRUCTIONS FOR INSTALLING AND USING
Disinfectant (Macintosh) and F-PROT (DOS/Windows)
-------------------------------------------------
Macintosh (Disinfectant)
Obtaining, Installing, and Using Antiviral Software
-----------------------------------------------
Disinfectant is an excellent Macintosh virus scanner distributed by
Northwestern University as freeware. ITD maintains, supports and
distributes Disinfectant free of charge to members of the U-M
community for use on their personal or work computers.
OBTAINING DISINFECTANT
Disinfectant is available in the ~swdist ("software distribution")
directory on IFS (Institutional File System) for either FTP (File
Transfer Protocol) or AppleShare access via the Chooser.
For FTP access, the site is ftp.ifs.umich.edu (pathname:
~swdist/d/Disinfectant/). For AppleShare Chooser access, connect
as Guest in the zone umich-IFS ; select the Software_Distribution
volume (pathname: d/Disinfectant/via_IFS/). See QuickNote:
Obtaining Software From U-M, Step-by-step S4147.
INSTALLING DISINFECTANT
Follow these steps to install Disinfectant on your personal or work
computer (including the protective INIT to check automatically for
viruses whenever the machine is started, a program is launched, or a
disk is inserted). For more information, see the Disinfectant
documentation under the Apple menu when Disinfectant is running.
1. Insert the diskette in your machine with the Disinfectant
program on it.
2. Open the diskette window and drag the Disinfectant icon onto
your hard drive icon.
3. Open your hard disk window and double-click the Disinfectant
icon.
4. Choose Install Protection INIT from the Protect menu. If you
already have an INIT installed and it is not the current version,
Disinfectant will ask permission to update it. Click the Install
button.
5. Choose Restart from the Special menu to make the protection
active.
USING DISINFECTANT
To use Disinfectant to scan for viruses:
1. Double-click the Disinfectant icon. The initial window will
provide instructions to access the "Quick Start" information. You
should read this the first time you run Disinfectant.
2. Select a drive to scan by clicking the Drive button until the name
of the desired drive appears in the upper right corner of the dialog
box, then press the Scan button. Scan all diskettes and hard drives.
3. If Disinfectant finds a virus, select the infected drive by using
the Drive button, then press the Disinfect button. The program will
attempt to remove the virus. If disinfection is unsuccessful or if you
have further questions, contact the ITD consultants (see "Additional
Resources" below).
DOS/Windows (F-PROT)
Obtaining, Installing, and Using Antiviral Software
-----------------------------------------------
F-PROT is an excellent antiviral package distributed by Frisk
Software International (FSI) as shareware. U-M maintains a site
license with FSI for F-PROT making it available free of charge to
members of the
U-M community for use on their personal or work computers.
OBTAINING F-PROT
F-PROT is available in the ~swdist ("software distribution")
directory on IFS (Institutional File System) by using FTP (File
Transfer Protocol) software such as Rapid Filer (LAN WorkPlace) or
FTP. The FTP site is ftp.ifs.umich.edu (pathname: ~swdist/f/fprot/).
See QuickNote: Obtaining Software From U-M, Step-by-step S4147
for specific instructions and QuickNote: Using Rapid Filer to
Transfer Files Through FTP, Step-by-step S4162 (or the online help
for Rapid Filer).
USING F-PROT AT HOME OR WORK
There are four steps to take to protect your personal or work
computer (each step is outlined in the sections below):
A. Make sure that your computer has no viruses and disinfect it if it
does.
B. Install antivirus software on the hard drive and keep it current.
C. Install software to detect a virus automatically when it tries to
infect your machine.
D. Make certain that you have no infected diskettes.
A. USING F-PROT TO SCAN AND REMOVE VIRUSES.
1. On your personal or work computer:
a. Boot from a write-protected DOS system diskette containing the
F-PROT.EXE, ENGLISH.TX0, and SIGN.DEF files. Follow steps 1-4 in the
"Obtaining F-PROT" section to make this diskette.
b. Type F-PROT at the A:\> DOS prompt.
2. Choose Scan.
3. Choose Action. Use the arrow keys to choose Disinfect/Query.
4. If necessary, choose Search and use the arrow keys to select the
drive you wish to scan.
5. Choose Begin Scan. F-PROT will ask permission to remove any
viruses it detects and will produce a report after scanning the hard
drive.
B. INSTALLING F-PROT
Follow the steps below to install the F-PROT utilities on your
personal or work computer. For further information see the
VIRSTOP.DOC file after installation.
1. If you do not have one already, create a subdirectory on your hard
drive in which to store F-PROT. For example:
MD C:\F-PROT
Step 1 needs to be done only once. The following steps will need to
be done with each new release.
2. Make the subdirectory created in Step 1 the current directory and
drive. For example:
CD C:\F-PROT
3. Install the current ZIPfile version of F-PROT in the subdirectory
created in Step 1. For example:
COPY A:FP-220.ZIP C:
4. Extract the ZIPfile (where xxx is the current version number):
PKUNZIP -O FP-xxx.ZIP
The -O switch will overwrite the previous version of F-PROT, if
any exists, without asking whether each file should be overwritten,
which is OK.
C. INSTALLING VIRSTOP
Follow the steps below to install the VIRSTOP resident scanner so
that it will detect a virus automatically when it tries to infect your
computer or diskettes. VIRSTOP will provide vigilance against
viruses between your periodic manual scans.
1. Use the text editor to make certain that there are no references
to other antiviral programs in the C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT or C:\CONFIG.SYS
files. For example, delete or comment out (using REM) lines like
C:\MCAFEE\VSHIELD /LOCK, C:\DOS\MSAV, or C:\DOS\IBMAV. This
list is not all-inclusive, but it's a start.
2. Edit your C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT file to call F-PROT's VIRSTOP
resident file antivirus monitor. You can use the EDIT command or any
other DOS editor which saves files in text mode. For example:
EDIT C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT
3. Add the following line to this file (we suggest that you put it as
the first line of the file or as near the beginning as possible). Save
and exit the file after you have entered the line. For example:
C:\F-PROT\VIRSTOP /COPY
NOTE -- If you connect to a Novell or Banyan network, you need to
run VIRSTOP again with the /REHOOK switch AFTER you have logged
on to the network. Put the following line in either your
AUTOEXEC.BAT or LOGIN batchfile after your login procedure
information. For example:
C:\F-PROT\VIRSTOP /REHOOK
There are other features that can be used also; see VIRSTOP.DOC
for details.
4. Reboot your computer so that the new antivirus software will
take effect.
D. SCANNING DISKETTES WITH F-PROT
Make sure there are no viruses on your hard drive and you have
installed F-PROT using the steps above. Then:
1. Change to the F-PROT subdirectory. For example:
CD C:\F-PROT
2. To begin scanning and, when necessary, disinfecting your
diskettes, type:
F-PROT A: /INTER /DISINF
Scan all diskettes and hard drives to make sure your system is clean.
If disinfection is unsuccessful or if you have further questions,
contact the U-M Virus Busters (virus.busters@umich.edu)
.
